☕️ ☕️ Hanoi Vietnam’s Creamy Secret
Egg Coffee – sounds odd and unappealing but turns out it’s oh so appealing!

The birth of the famous Hanoi Egg Coffee was first created in Hanoi in 1946 by Mr Nguyen Van Giang (who passed away in 1987), the father of the current owner of Café Giảng.
But before the legend of egg coffee, Mr Giang, while bartending at the 5-star Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel became accustomed to making thousands of expensive cappuccinos with coffee, cream, and milk foam for foreigners,
Mr Giang noted that when the resistance against the French kicked off the first Indochina War in the late 1946, he had no choice but to relinquish his job at Sofitel Hanoi and opened a café at home, Café Giảng – today one of the most famous traditional coffee shops in Hanoi – located on the east side of the Old Quarter, named after its founder and Egg Cofee inventor Mr. Nguyễn Giảng.
Shortly after opening his café, Giảng faced the dilemma of milk shortage caused by the war (a.k.a the First Indochina War) and started to think how to instead utilise the abundance of fresh and delicious organic chicken eggs of Vietnam (which are reasonably priced) to combine sugar, condensed milk and a secret ingredient to bring to life this amazing cup of coffee.

With a clever hack whisking in egg yolk as a much-needed substitute for dairy product, surprisingly, he created a creamy cup of egg coffee resembling a liquefied tiramisu!
Cafe Giang today is still a family owned business, owned and run by the son Nguyễn Chí Hoà, one of 8 children.
While many cafes have updated their decor to more modern and comfy sofa and chairs, Cafe Giang remains true to origins with their original low stools and tables, dark wood and terracotta tiles. It’s definitely a challenge for those who are OCD about hygiene, like myself 😁 but totally worth the experience to sample coffee that is a sublime balance between bitterness and sweetness.
So if you’re in Hanoi, be sure to hop on a bicycle, scooter or brave the humidity and explore the streets en route to 39 Nguyễn Hữu Huân, Hoàn Kiếm to sample Hanoi’s famous Egg Coffee. The original Egg Coffee.
